2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-018
Error
Description
Depicting the young Abraham Lincoln as a rail-splitter in his Formative Years in Indiana, the second Bicentennial reverse design features Lincoln reading while sitting on a log — and DDR-018 shows light spread Southeast manifesting as extra index and middle fingers appearing between the normal fingers of Lincoln's hand. Die markers include UVC-2646 and DMR-021. Stage A shows both reverse and obverse in confirmed Early Die State (EDS), establishing a reference point for the die's earliest production. Stage B and Stage C remain unconfirmed at MDS and LDS respectively. The extra fingers diagnostic is among the more anatomically specific doubled die features documented on American coinage, as the hub displacement created phantom digits that appear to give Lincoln additional fingers — a visually engaging anomaly that makes DDR-018 memorable among the extensive Bicentennial DDR catalog. Charles Vickers designed and sculpted this reverse, depicting the young Lincoln absorbing knowledge that would shape his future leadership. The 2009 Bicentennial Cents were produced at both Philadelphia and Denver, with variety researchers examining both mint outputs systematically. Cataloged by VarietyVista, DDR-018 stands out within the Formative Years design DDR population for its distinctive anatomical doubling feature.
