2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-002

Description

One of the most dramatic doubled die reverses in the 2009 Lincoln cent Formative Years design, DDR-002 displays a very strong spread manifesting as an extra index finger north of the normal index finger on the young Lincoln figure. Cross-referenced as Cherrypickers FS-803, this variety is cataloged by VarietyVista with universal variety code UVC-2616 and die marriage record DMR-004. Six die stages document an extensive die life. Stage A is unconfirmed. Stage B in early-to-mid die state shows light die cracks on the right boot ankle and northeast from the left bootstrap, with minute die chips on the normal index finger and shirtsleeve, plus a die crack with chip above the eye. Stage C develops a small die chip on the right boot ankle. Stage D adds a second small chip at the same location. Stages E and F in mid-die state and late die state respectively remain unconfirmed. The FS-803 Cherrypickers listing reflects the popularity of this variety, and the bold extra finger provides one of the most visually accessible doubled die diagnostics in the entire 2009 Bicentennial cent program.
