2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008
Error
Description
Eighth in the reverse doubled die census for a 2009 DC & US Territories quarter, DDR-008 continues the pattern of southward-spread extra cloud varieties documented for this territorial design — specifically a medium spread producing an extra cloud to the right of the upper tower. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-2229 and DMR-010, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces are at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The sequential progression of UVC numbers (2227, 2228, 2229 for DDR-006 through DDR-008) and DMR numbers (008, 009, 010) confirms three consecutively cataloged but independent die varieties sharing the same tower-and-cloud diagnostic region — each originating from a separate working die that received its own unique hub doubling event during die preparation. The 2009 DC & US Territories quarter program honored six jurisdictions, and the affected design features the architectural tower composition where atmospheric cloud elements proved particularly susceptible to revealing southward hub displacement. Like DDR-006 and DDR-007, this variety is identified as a satin finish specimen found in 2009 Mint Sets — the distinctive burnished-blank production method used for uncirculated set coins from 2005 through 2010. Three independent DDRs sharing the same general doubling region on the same territorial design raises the question of whether a systematic bias in the hubbing press setup favored southward displacement during the die production run for this reverse design. Collectors should compare their satin finish Mint Set specimens against confirmed reference images, examining the cloud formations near the upper tower under moderate magnification.
