2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
On the Puerto Rico Satin Finish quarter's reverse, a light spread to the east produces an extra wall adjacent to the upper tower of the sentry box — a doubled die variety affecting one of the most recognizable architectural elements in Caribbean numismatic design. Designated DDR-001 by VarietyVista with die classification UVC-1876 and die marriage DMR-003, this is the primary doubled die reverse cataloged for the 2009 Puerto Rico Satin Finish issue. Both obverse and reverse are documented in early die state, with mid and late die states unconfirmed. The Puerto Rico quarter, part of the 2009 DC & US Territories series that extended the State Quarters concept to non-state jurisdictions, features a sentry box from San Juan's El Morro fortress with a hibiscus flower. Satin Finish quarters, produced for inclusion in U.S. Mint uncirculated sets from 2005 through 2010, received a distinctive matte-like surface treatment that falls between the sharpness of a proof and the luster of a business strike. This finishing process can sometimes make subtle doubling easier to detect than on highly reflective proof surfaces. Struck on copper-nickel clad at 24.3mm. Examine the upper tower area for the eastward spread that creates the characteristic extra wall impression.
