Description

Struck as part of the 2009 District of Columbia and U.S. Territories Quarters program, the Puerto Rico quarter's reverse features a sentry box from the historic El Morro fortress — and DDR-005 reveals light spread east manifesting as an extra lower wall on the upper tower of this iconic structure. Cataloged by VarietyVista as UVC-2226 with die marriage DMR-007, both obverse and reverse appear in early die state, with later states unconfirmed. This variety was identified on Satin Finish strikes from 2009 Uncirculated Mint Sets, the special strike format that gave coins a distinctive matte-like surface different from standard business strikes. The Territories quarters marked the final expansion of the commemorative quarter program that had begun with the 50 State Quarters in 1999, and varieties from these later issues tend to be less widely publicized than those from the original state quarter run, creating opportunities for attentive collectors.
