2009 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-007
Error
Description
Seventh in the reverse doubled die census for a 2009 DC & US Territories quarter, DDR-007 exhibits medium southward spread appearing as an extra cloud to the right of the upper tower — the same diagnostic region documented for the closely related DDR-006, but originating from an independent working die that received its own distinct hub doubling event. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-2228 and DMR-009, documenting three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces are at early die state, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The sequential UVC numbers (2227 for DDR-006, 2228 for DDR-007) and adjacent DMR numbers (008 and 009) confirm these are consecutively cataloged but independent die varieties sharing the same general doubling region. The DC & US Territories quarter program produced six designs in 2009, and the tower-and-cloud reverse motif on the affected territory's design provides the atmospheric elements where southward-displaced hub impressions manifest as phantom cloud formations. The comments again identify this as a satin finish variety found in 2009 Mint Sets — the burnished-blank, laser-treated-die production method that created the distinctive soft matte luster on uncirculated set coins from 2005 through 2010. Medium spread represents a step up from DDR-006's light classification, suggesting DDR-007 displays slightly more pronounced cloud displacement that may be more readily detectable under moderate magnification. Collectors should acquire satin finish specimens from Mint Sets and compare the cloud formations near the upper tower against reference images, using 10-15x magnification to identify the displaced secondary cloud impression south of the primary.
