2009-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-022
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2009-D 1-cent EC WDDR-022, this Lincoln Bicentennial Cent doubled die reverse shows doubling on the left side of log end #9 on the Early Childhood reverse designed by Richard Master and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. Struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc at 2.50 grams and 19.05 mm diameter, this variety carries no known cross-references but is assigned estimated values of AU=$3, MS60=$5, MS63=$7, and MS65=$10 — notably higher than many other 2009 EC doubled dies, suggesting greater visual impact or relative scarcity. Obverse die markers include a small die gouge above the T in LIBERTY, a small die gouge just to the right of the D mintmark, and a die crack running NW through the eyebrow and into the forehead. On the reverse, a die gouge can be found at the rim above the I in UNITED, another inside the A of STATES, and a short die crack runs SE from the bottom of the M in the designer's initials RM. The die gouge near the D mintmark is particularly useful for authentication, as its proximity to the mintmark provides a reliable reference point. The higher estimated values compared to other EC WDDR varieties suggest collectors and dealers have noted either stronger visual doubling characteristics or fewer confirmed specimens in the marketplace for this particular die pair.
