2009-D Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2009-D 1¢ EC WDDR-002 (Early Childhood reverse design), this Lincoln Bicentennial Cent displays doubling on the left side of log ends #5 through #9 — five consecutive log end positions in the cabin wall where the secondary hub impression created visible displacement, referenced against the numbered log end identification system used for the Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky reverse. The attribution notes include estimated values of AU = $5, MS60 = $7, MS63 = $10, and MS65 = $15, indicating a modestly valued but actively collected doubled die variety. Obverse die markers include small die gouges above and between the I and B of LIBERTY, a die crack running northwest through the eyebrow into the forehead, and a die crack running northwest to southeast through the upper front of the forehead. Reverse markers include a die gouge to the left of the upper T in UNITED, a small die gouge below the bottom left side of the D in UNITED, and a die crack running from the rim east through the lower RM of an inscription. No additional cross-references are currently known. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial Cent commemorated the 200th anniversary of Abraham Lincoln’s birth with four rotating reverse designs representing different life periods. The Early Childhood reverse, designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz, depicts the Kentucky log cabin where Lincoln spent his formative years. Struck at the Denver Mint in copper-plated zinc (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.50 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter, the 2009-D cents had lower mintages than typical years. The consecutive five-log-end doubling pattern creates a visually cohesive diagnostic zone along one side of the cabin wall.
