2009-D Doubled Die Reverse DDR-008

Description

Cataloged by VarietyVista as DDR-008 with the Universal Variety Code UVC-2779 and Die Marker Record DMR-010, this doubled die reverse variety appears on a 2009-D Lincoln Bicentennial cent struck at the Denver Mint. The 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial program featured four unique reverse designs celebrating Lincoln's life, and this variety appears on the Log Cabin (Birth and Early Childhood in Kentucky) reverse designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Jim Licaretz. The coin is composed of copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19 mm diameter. The primary doubling diagnostic on DDR-008 presents as a medium spread to the southwest and east, manifesting as extra log ends visible on logs numbered 9, 10, and 11 counted from the bottom of the cabin structure. The log cabin design, with its stacked horizontal logs and protruding end cuts, provides excellent reference points where hub doubling creates clearly defined extra elements. Multiple die stages have been documented: Stage A in early die state (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die crack to the southeast from the RM designer's initials in early-to-mid die state with the obverse also in early-to-mid die state, and Stage C in late die state (unconfirmed). The die crack from the RM initials at Stage B provides a useful attribution marker for determining die state on individual specimens. Denver produced substantial quantities of the 2009 Bicentennial cents, and the four-design program created complex die management requirements that contributed to the variety of die anomalies discovered on coins from this commemorative production year.
