2009-D Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team with Crawford reference CDDO-001, this 2009-D District of Columbia Quarter doubled die obverse presents a subtle identification challenge: the primary feature is described as either a partial extra earlobe or doubling to the hair curl near the bottom of the ear — highlighting how fine the line can be between a true doubled die and a die artifact. Regardless, the die markers provide a reliable convergent framework. On the obverse, a small die gouge appears below the bottom right U of TRUST, and small gouges are present above the ribbon in the queue. On the reverse, two small die gouges sit at the left bottom of the first U in PLURIBUS, a gouge occupies the space between the B and U of PLURIBUS, and a small gouge sits inside the lower R of FOR. The DC Quarter was part of the 2009 DC and US Territories series; the Denver issue is a clad coin struck for circulation. CDDO-001 is the Crawford reference, cross-linking the Wexler and Crawford systems for researchers working from either source.
