Description

Very strong spread with counterclockwise hubbing producing an extra ELL of ELLINGTON, doubling on the first two black piano keys, and additional spread on Duke Ellington's left hand and upper left arm makes this a doubled die reverse for the 2009 Denver Mint District of Columbia quarter. This DDR-001 is cross-referenced as FS-801 in the Cherrypickers' Guide. VarietyVista catalogs it under UVC-1770 with DMR-003, tracking Stage A where both reverse and obverse are in Early Die State, Stage B in Mid Die State (unconfirmed), and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The DC & US Territories Quarters of 2009 honored the District of Columbia and five U.S. territories — the final installment of the broader statehood quarter program that began in 1999. The DC reverse features Duke Ellington seated at a piano, designed by Joel Iskowitz, and the very strong counterclockwise spread creates visual doubling on the musician's name and the piano keys. The FS-801 listing ensures this variety appears in the primary reference guide used by dealers and collectors nationwide.
