Description

Struck from the Position B die pair at the Philadelphia Mint, this 2008 John Quincy Adams Presidential dollar exhibits trail die markers on the reverse. Trail dies occur when impressions from one die transfer to another during manufacturing or storage, leaving faint foreign design elements on struck coins. Two die stages are documented. Stage B at mid-die state shows a small die gouge between the 25 of 1825 on the obverse and a die gouge in the field right of the T in STATES on the reverse. Stage C, reported by William Glenn, reaches late-mid die state with a die crack in Adams's head under the CY of QUINCY while the reverse retains the field gouge. The Position B designation indicates die orientation relative to the reverse, a detail tracked by Presidential dollar collectors. Trail die varieties on Presidential dollars are less common than doubled dies or RPMs.
