Description

Second documented obverse trail die for the 2008 Philadelphia Mint James Monroe Presidential Dollar struck in Position B edge lettering orientation, this variety preserves progressive die deterioration on the portrait obverse. In Stage A early die state, the obverse carries a small die dot on the forehead of the Monroe portrait — an incuse mark transferred from a raised imperfection on the die that serves as a key attribution marker. The reverse is also in early die state with no specific markers noted. James Monroe, the fifth President of the United States, appeared on the 2008 Presidential Dollar alongside John Quincy Adams, Andrew Jackson, and Martin Van Buren as the program continued its chronological march through the presidency. Presidential Dollars were struck in manganese brass clad composition, and Position B refers to the orientation of the edge lettering — date, mint mark, and E PLURIBUS UNUM — relative to the obverse face. Trail die varieties on Presidential Dollars are relatively uncommon compared to the prolific Lincoln Cent series, making documented examples noteworthy additions to the die variety record for this short-lived denomination.
