2008 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-001
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2008-P 25¢ OK WDDO-001 and cross-referenced as CONECA 1-O-VIII, this Oklahoma State Quarter displays doubling on the underside of Washington's earlobe — a subtle but diagnostically significant feature positioned on a high-relief area of the portrait that catches light distinctively under magnification. The CONECA Class VIII designation indicates Tilted Hub Doubling, where the working hub was angled relative to the working die during the secondary impression, creating a tilt-induced displacement pattern. Obverse die markers provide robust attribution support: a die chip in the lower B of LIBERTY, two die gouges above the Q in QUARTER, a die crack running across the base of the bust and through the upper designer's initials, and a die chip on the base of the bust north of the R in QUARTER. The reverse exhibits a die chip in the upper right petals of the center wildflower on the right — a marker within the Oklahoma state design's distinctive scissor-tailed flycatcher and wildflower composition. The 2008 Oklahoma State Quarter was among the final issues in the 50 State Quarters Program (1999-2008), struck at the Philadelphia Mint in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a 24.26 mm diameter. The Oklahoma reverse features a scissor-tailed flycatcher in flight surrounded by wildflowers, designed by Phebe Hemphill. The die crack extending across the bust base and into the designer's initials documents progressive structural failure in a high-stress area where the relief transition from the portrait to the field creates concentrated striking forces on the die surface.
