Description

Discovered by Robert Pelletier, this 2008 Philadelphia Memorial Cent is a trail die obverse variety at Stage C, its late die state classification indicating the die pair was near retirement. Obverse at LDS: a die crack in Lincoln's forehead and another die crack with die chips across the top of Lincoln's head. Reverse at LDS: a die chip in the top of column 1 and a die crack in the top of column 2. Trail die varieties occur when an incomplete secondary hubbing creates faint directional extensions from design elements rather than fully doubled images. Struck in copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. As a 2008-P issue, this represents one of the final Memorial Cent trail dies before the design's retirement in favor of the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial reverses.
