Description

Faint trail lines extend from the bottom of the date digits at an approximate offset of 180 degrees on this 2008 Philadelphia Memorial Cent, the final year of the Memorial reverse design. Found by Jeremy Gardner. Die markers at Stage A: obverse at EDS with a die crack in Lincoln's forehead; reverse at EDS with two joined die gouges above the left base tip. A die crack already at EDS indicates the obverse die began service with a pre-existing structural weakness in the forehead's high-stress zone. Struck in copper-plated zinc, weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 180-degree offset produces downward trail extensions from the date. As a 2008-P issue, this represents one of the last Memorial Cent trail die varieties before the 2009 Lincoln Bicentennial reverses replaced the iconic design, making it part of the final generation documented on this reverse.
