2008P-1DEO-006T Trail Die Obverse

Description

Discovered by Jeremy Gardner, the 2008-P Lincoln Memorial Cent 1DEO-006T is the sixth cataloged trail die obverse variety for the 2008-P date. Trail dies are a class of die error in which a working die shifts from aligned position or develops abnormal hub recession, causing design elements to trail faintly into adjacent areas on struck coins. Two die stages are documented. Stage B — the early to mid-die state — is the most thoroughly described: on the obverse, a small but developing die crack has appeared in the top of Lincoln's forehead, entering the hair and angling toward the first T in TRUST; on the reverse, die cracks are present in both the C and the E of CENT. These 2008-P cents were struck at the Philadelphia Mint on copper-plated zinc with Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse, in the final year of the Memorial reverse design before the 2009 Bicentennial commemorative reverses. The Stage B forehead crack angling toward TRUST and the C and E cracks in CENT define the diagnostic markers for this trail die obverse variety.

Die Markers

• Stage “B”, obverse is EMDS – a small developing die crack is seen in the top part of Lincoln’s forehead entering into the hair and angling towards the first T in TRUST.
• Reverse is EMDS – a die crack in the C and E of CENT.
