2007P-1DER-011T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Documented in the Trail Dies catalog and discovered by Jeremy Gardner, the 2007P-1DER-011T is a trail die reverse variety found on the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent. Trail dies are a specialized category of minting variety where a faint secondary impression of the design appears offset from the primary image, typically caused during the die manufacturing, installation, or initial test-strike process — distinct from hub doubling in their origin mechanism and visual presentation. Die marker documentation identifies Stage "B" at mid-die-state (MDS) with two die cracks visible in Lincoln's head on the obverse and a die chip above the first column in the cornice area along with a die crack in the top of column 3 on the reverse. The dual die cracks in Lincoln's head document progressive structural failure in the obverse die's highest-stress portrait area, where the deep relief of the hair and facial features concentrates the forces of each strike. The cornice die chip and column 3 crack on the reverse similarly reflect stress-related deterioration at high-relief architectural elements of the Memorial design. The Lincoln Memorial Cent was struck at the Philadelphia Mint in 2007 in copper-plated zinc composition (97.5% zinc, 2.5% copper) weighing 2.5 grams with a 19.05 mm diameter. The 2007 date was among the final years of Gasparro's Memorial reverse before it was replaced by the 2009 Bicentennial and 2010 Shield designs.
