2007 (P) Lincoln Memorial Cent - P-1DER-005T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Trails leave the tops of the letters of E PLURIBUS UNUM on 2007P-1DER-005T at 320°, northwest. TrailDies compares an early and a middle die state and shows the lines growing gradually weaker from the earlier state to the later. The code reads 2007P (date, Philadelphia), 1 (cent), DER (reverse design extension), 005 (file), T (trails). At stage A both sides are early die state, and a gouge just right of CENT's T marks the reverse. At stage B the reverse, now middle die state, has a chip on the left edge of the cornice, a crack and a large chip high in bay 1 and a chip high in column 3. Louis Schaeffer of Maryland found the die. Trails are commonly attributed to rotary polishing of the die; a minority attributes them to die-to-hub movement.
