2007P-1DER-003T Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered by Louis Schaeffer of Maryland, this third trail die reverse for the 2007 Philadelphia Mint Lincoln Memorial Cent originally exhibited isolated dual directional trails on the E of ONE, with offset directions of 100 degrees and 280 degrees — reciprocal bearings representing the outward path and return path of the die's lateral motion during hubbing. While only the E of ONE was affected, the dual directional character confirms genuine die shift rather than a simple impression artifact. The T suffix designates this as a trail-lines-only classification. At Stage C late die state, no notable obverse markers were observed, but the reverse carries a die crack in the cornice over bays 3 and 4. The cornice crack at LDS indicates progressive die deterioration. Trail dies with reciprocal bearings are particularly interesting from a manufacturing standpoint, as they preserve evidence of the die's movement path in both directions during the hubbing event. The 2007-P cent was among the last two years of the Lincoln Memorial reverse, and Louis Schaeffer's discovery adds to the documented record of late-era Memorial varieties.
