Description

Documented by MadDieClashes as ADC-25c-2007-01(ID), this atypical die clash variety was discovered on a 2007-P Idaho Statehood quarter from the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. This rather strong, unabraded die clash shows both obverse and reverse clashing effects. On the reverse, the clash mark left by the falcon's neck is clearly visible, while Washington's queue — the gathered ponytail at the back of his head — is seen clashed into the field below the falcon's beak and through the word ESTO. The curls in Washington's queue can be traced as clashed impressions in the field area between the falcon's neck and the Idaho state map outline. The term "unabraded" indicates that the Mint did not polish the die to remove the clash marks before returning it to service, meaning all subsequent coins from this die pair retained the clash evidence. The 2007 Idaho quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad composition at 5.67 grams and 24.26 mm with a reeded edge. The Idaho reverse design, featuring a Peregrine falcon above a map of the state with the motto ESTO PERPETUA ("Let it be perpetual"), created a distinctive layout where clash transfers from the obverse could appear in the open field areas around the falcon and map elements. Die clashes occur when no planchet feeds between the dies and they strike each other directly, transferring incuse impressions of one die's design onto the other. Atypical die clashes are distinguished from normal clashes by unusual contact geometry that produces clash marks in unexpected locations or orientations.
