PC-25c-2006P-02R(ND) Pre-Cud

Description
Second reverse pre-cud documented for the 2006-P North Dakota State Quarter, PC-25c-2006P-02R(ND) records an early-stage die rim fracture on one of the America the Beautiful quarter series' predecessors — the 50 State Quarters Program that ran from 1999 through 2008. North Dakota was the 39th state to be honored in the program, with its reverse design featuring two American bison grazing on the North Dakota badlands with a sun rising over rugged buttes in the background, accompanied by the inscription "North Dakota" and the state's year of admission, 1889. Philadelphia struck millions of North Dakota quarters in 2006, and the pre-cud designation indicates that a reverse die developed an incipient rim crack before the fracture advanced to the retained or full cud stage. Pre-cuds represent the earliest detectable phase of die rim failure — a crack has formed within the die steel extending from the rim inward, but the fractured section remains perfectly flush with the surrounding die surface. On struck coins, the pre-cud appears as a fine raised line extending from the rim toward the design field, tracing the subsurface crack's path through the die. The North Dakota reverse design's landscape elements — the bison, buttes, and prairie grass — create a detailed relief near the rim area where pre-cud lines can intersect with design features in visually distinctive ways. The "(ND)" in the catalog designation identifies the specific State Quarter design, as the 2006-P issue also included Nevada, Nebraska, Colorado, and South Dakota in the program rotation. Cataloged by the Cuds on Coins service with no known cross-references, this variety documents die behavior in the high-volume State Quarter production that saw billions of quarters struck across five designs per year. Collectors examining potential matches should look for a fine raised line extending from the reverse rim under 10-15x magnification, distinguishable from contact marks by its consistent appearance across multiple specimens from the same die.
