Description

A pre-cud die crack is visible on the reverse of this 1859 Indian Head cent. A pre-cud is a significant die crack that has not yet progressed to a full cud; the crack runs through the die surface and will eventually develop into a raised die break at the rim as the die continues to deteriorate. In this case, the crack runs from approximately 3 o'clock through the wreath, continuing to just east of 6 o'clock on the opposite rim. The 1859 Indian Head cent is the first year of the series and features the unique Laurel Wreath reverse design, used only in this inaugural year before being replaced by the Oak Wreath with Shield reverse in 1860.
