CU-25c-2006P-01R(ND) Cud
Error
Description
Cataloged by the Cuds on Coins reference as CU-25c-2006P-01R(ND), this is a cud error on the reverse of a 2006 Philadelphia Mint North Dakota State Quarter documented at Stage A. A cud is a major die break occurring at the rim where a piece of the die fractures and falls away entirely, leaving a void in the die face that produces a raised, featureless blob of metal at the corresponding edge of every coin struck afterward. The Stage A designation indicates this is the earliest documented die state for this break, meaning specimens from this stage show the cud in its initial form before any additional die deterioration accumulated. No external cross-references are currently known. The 2006 North Dakota State Quarter is part of the 50 State Quarters Program (1999–2008) authorized by the 50 States Commemorative Coin Program Act. The North Dakota reverse, designed by Donna Weaver, depicts two American bison grazing before a butte landscape with a sun setting in the background, representing the state's Badlands terrain and wildlife. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition (8.33% nickel, 91.67% copper) weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm at the Philadelphia Mint, the 2006-P North Dakota quarter had a substantial mintage. Cuds on State Quarters are particularly collected because each of the 50 unique reverse designs offers different visual results when a die break occurs — the location of the cud relative to the state-specific design elements determines the character of each variety, and reverse cuds on pictorial designs like North Dakota's bison scene create especially notable specimens.
