2006 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-002

Description

Discovered by Allen Darrow and attributed as Wexler Variety ID: 2006-P WDDR-002, this Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel reverse exhibits Class VIII tilted hub doubling. The doubling appears below the upper portion of the door frame on the center door above the steps of Monticello. Class VIII doubling results from the hub being tilted at a slight angle relative to the die face during impression, creating displacement that varies across the design — strongest where the tilt produces maximum separation and fading where alignment remains close. The 2006 Jefferson Nickel features Jamie Franki's forward-facing portrait, introduced in 2005 as part of the Westward Journey redesign, while Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse returned after the 2004-2005 commemorative reverses. The architectural detail of Monticello's facade — doorways, columns, windows, and steps — provides numerous reference points for detecting hub doubling. Tilted hub varieties are among the more challenging to identify because their displacement follows a gradient rather than appearing uniformly, and detection often requires careful comparison of corresponding elements on opposite sides of the design.
