Description

Completing a trio of proof Oregon State Quarter doubled die reverses from the San Francisco Mint, the WDDR-008 is cataloged under the Crawford system as CDDR-006 and classified by CONECA as 4-R-VIII. The Wexler designation is 2005-S 25¢ Pr OR WDDR-008. The CONECA class 4 offset hub doubling on this variety produces a different doubling pattern than the class 2 found on WDDR-003 or the class 5 on WDDR-007, making careful comparison across all three varieties a valuable exercise for students of the hubbing process. Oregon's Crater Lake design, with its layered composition of water, crater walls, and dense forest, provides a rich canvas on which even subtle hub offsets can leave detectable traces. The existence of multiple doubled die varieties from a single proof die run speaks to the challenges of maintaining perfect hub alignment even under the controlled conditions of San Francisco's proof production facility. Collectors assembling a complete set of 2005-S Oregon proof doubled dies will want all three WDDR entries represented.
