Description

The 2005 (S) Proof Oregon State Quarter is a proof quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 3,262,960 proof Oregon quarters dated 2005. The obverse features George Washington facing left, based on a 1786 bust by Jean-Antoine Houdon and the reverse displays unique designs representing each of the 50 U.S. states, released in the order the states ratified the Constitution or joined the Union. The reverse depicts Crater Lake with Wizard Island visible, flanked by mountain peaks and conifers. Crater Lake, formed in the caldera of a collapsed volcano, is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,949 feet. The 2005 quarters honored, in release order, California, Minnesota, Oregon, Kansas, and West Virginia. Satin finish specimens from mint sets were produced. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements prized by collectors. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins. Estimated market value ranges from $0.25 to $25 depending on grade and condition. Struck in 75% copper, 25% nickel, weighing 5.67 grams, 24.3 mm in diameter, with a reeded edge. Cataloged as PCGS #913061.
