2005-S Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005

Description

Documented by the Wexler Team with Variety ID 2005-S 25c Pr OR WDDR-005, this doubled die reverse appears on a 2005-S proof Oregon State Quarter struck at the San Francisco Mint. The doubling is visible on the bottom right end of Wizard Island, a volcanic cinder cone rising from the surface of Crater Lake that is a central element of Donna Weaver's reverse design depicting Oregon's most iconic natural landmark. Obverse die markers note that much of the lettering shows strike doubling on the specimen examined, which should not be confused with hub doubling, and a small die crack appears on Washington's eyebrow along with a die gouge at the top center of Washington's neck. The reverse carries a small die gouge dot just above the long branch in from the rim at approximately 4 o'clock. No other cross-references are currently known. The 2005-S proof Oregon quarter was struck in copper-nickel clad, weighing 5.67 grams at 24.3 mm diameter. As part of the State Quarters 1999-2008 series, the Oregon quarter was the 33rd state issue, released on June 6, 2005. Crater Lake, formed approximately 7,700 years ago when Mount Mazama collapsed after a volcanic eruption, is the deepest lake in the United States at 1,943 feet. The doubling on Wizard Island adds numismatic significance to a design that already captures one of America's most dramatic geological features.
