Description

Submitted by Kenneth Russell and cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2005 P WDDR-064 Business Strike Ocean in View, this Jefferson Nickel Westward Journey reverse doubled die is the sixty-fourth documented DDR for the 2005-P Ocean in View design — an extraordinary number of reverse varieties reflecting the massive die population employed for this popular commemorative design. The 2005 Westward Journey series featured Joe Fitzgerald's "Ocean in View" reverse depicting a coastal scene commemorating the Lewis and Clark Expedition's arrival at the Pacific Ocean. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge (dot) between the upper portions of U and S of TRUST. The reverse carries multiple diagnostic markers: a series of die gouges beneath the upper crossbar of the E of FIVE, a short vertical die gouge below the F of FIVE, and a die dot under the lowest branch on the right side of the target tree in the landscape design. The Jefferson Nickel was struck in standard 75% copper and 25% nickel composition, weighing 5.0 grams at 21.2 mm diameter with a plain edge. The 2005 Philadelphia business strike saw enormous production volumes as collectors and the general public enthusiastically pursued the Westward Journey designs, generating the large working die population from which sixty-four distinct reverse doubled dies could emerge. The die gouge series beneath the E crossbar of FIVE provides the most accessible pick-up point, followed by confirmation of the dot under the lowest right-side tree branch — both features visible under 7x to 10x magnification.
