2005 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-035

Description

Tracked by VarietyVista with die identifiers UVC-1489 and DMR-037, this 2005 State Quarter DDR-035 displays medium spread but very light doubling to the upper right side of the primary tree — a subtle manifestation where the hub displacement produced visible secondary impressions concentrated on one side of the tree's canopy, indicating the displacement vector was oriented toward the upper right relative to this specific design element's position on the die. Three die stages document progressive deterioration: Stage A at early die state (EDS, unconfirmed); Stage B at early-to-mid die state showing the reverse in EMDS with a die crack developing from the front of the base of the bust and a die chip in front of the designer's initials on the obverse; and Stage C at late die state (LDS, unconfirmed). The obverse die crack from the bust base in Stage B serves as a secondary attribution point that helps collectors confirm both die identity and die state. The State Quarter program (1999-2008) struck unique reverse designs for each state in copper-nickel clad composition — 8.33% nickel bonded to a pure copper core — weighing 5.67 grams with a diameter of 24.26 mm. The Washington portrait obverse was modified by William Cousins from John Flanagan's original design. The "medium spread but very light" descriptor indicates a hub displacement of moderate distance that nonetheless produced only faint secondary impressions, suggesting the design relief in the tree area may be shallow enough that even moderate hub offset creates minimal visible separation between primary and secondary images in this region of the die face.
