Description

Strong doubling southeast of the branch from the bottom left side of the right tree marks VDDR-064 on the 2005 Philadelphia Jefferson Nickel — Bison reverse, part of the Westward Journey series that temporarily replaced Felix Schlag's Monticello design in 2004–2005. Attributed by VarietyVista with provisional catalog codes (UVC and DMR pending final assignment), this business strike variety transitions from an early die state reverse through an early-mid die state where a die break develops in the E of LIBERTY, with later states unconfirmed. The Bison reverse, designed by Jamie Franki, depicts a single American bison in profile — a design that references the reverse of James Earle Fraser's original Buffalo Nickel (1913–1938). The tree and branch elements in the landscape background provide fine detail where hub doubling manifests as discernible extra imagery. Die varieties on the Westward Journey nickels attract interest both from Jefferson Nickel specialists and collectors of the limited two-year design.
