Description
Sixty-first in the reverse doubled die census for the 2005 Jefferson nickel Westward Journey series, DDR-061 presents strong southward spread on the third lowest right branch of the left tree on the American Bison reverse designed by Jamie Franki. The strong spread classification places this variety among the more prominently doubled entries in the extensive 2005 DDR catalog, where the tree branch detail flanking the central bison has proven exceptionally productive for documenting hub doubling events. VarietyVista assigned identifiers UVC-1712 and DMR-064, tracking three die stages: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces show confirmed early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A ensures specimens with unworn die surfaces have been documented. This is a business strike variety, distinguishing it from any potential proof DDRs. The sheer volume of documented DDRs for the 2005 Westward Journey nickel — at least sixty-one reverse doubled dies — reflects how the intricate tree branch detail on Franki's Bison reverse created an ideal diagnostic canvas for detecting hub doubling. Each thin branch provides a precise linear reference where even slight displacement produces a clearly doubled line, and the multiple branches offer numerous independent diagnostic points within a single design area. Strong southward spread on the third lowest right branch of the left tree means the secondary hub impression landed noticeably below the primary on this specific element, producing a clearly separated doubled branch visible at 8-12x magnification. The DMR-064 number being higher than the DDR-061 number indicates that the VarietyVista die marriage registry includes non-DDR entries for this date, expanding the total die documentation beyond just doubled die varieties.
