Documented on the 2005 Jefferson Nickel featuring Jamie Franki's American Bison reverse from the Westward Journey series, this DDR-059 stands out for its unusually detailed four-stage die life progression. Cataloged by VarietyVista with UVC-1671 and DMR-062, Stage A shows the reverse at early die state with a small die gouge dot in the upper 2 of the date at early-to-mid die state. Stage B develops a small die chip in the W of the DW designer's initials at early-to-mid die state. Stage C advances significantly: a larger die chip in the W of DW, a die break above the F of FIVE, die cracks through the O of OF to the rim and through WI of LEWIS to the rim mark the late-to-mid die state. Stage D at late die state remains unconfirmed. This progressive deterioration from a minor gouge through expanding die chips to multiple die cracks and breaks tells a complete story of die failure under production stress.
