Description
Strong spread directed north on the lowest and south on the third lowest right branch of the left tree identifies this fifty-fifth DDR for the 2005 Jefferson Nickel Westward Journey "American Bison" reverse, a business strike variety. Die markers under UVC-1649 and DMR-058 document three stages with detailed die progression: Stage A in Early Die State (unconfirmed), Stage B showing a die chip in the W of the designer's initials at Early to Mid-Die State with depressions above the 0 of 1808, dot, V of FIVE, and TS of CENTS plus a die break in the E of LIBERTY also at EMDS, and Stage C in Late Die State (unconfirmed). The opposing directional spread — north on one branch, south on another — indicates a hub displacement pattern that produced divergent doubling at different vertical positions on the design. Cataloged by VarietyVista, the "American Bison" reverse by Jamie Franki depicting a bison similar to those Lewis and Clark encountered was produced only during 2005 as part of the Westward Journey commemorative program. Fifty-five DDRs for a single one-year design reflects the massive collector scrutiny applied to modern commemorative nickel issues. The Stage B die marker progression showing chips, depressions, and breaks across multiple design elements traces significant die deterioration through mid-production.
