Description
Fifty-third in a remarkably deep reverse doubled die census for the 2005 Jefferson nickel Westward Journey series, DDR-053 presents medium spread north of the lowest right branch of the left tree on the American Bison reverse designed by Jamie Franki. The Westward Journey program replaced Felix Schlag's Monticello reverse with two special designs in 2005 — the American Bison and Ocean in View — and the Bison design's intricate tree branches flanking the central buffalo provided exceptionally fine detail that readily reveals even moderate hub displacement. VarietyVista assigned die identifiers UVC-16473 and DMR-056, placing this variety within an extensive family of 2005 Jefferson DDRs. Three die stages are recorded: Stage A where both reverse and obverse surfaces exhibit early die state characteristics, Stage B at mid die state (unconfirmed), and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The EDS confirmation for Stage A means specimens exist with crisp, unworn die surfaces preserving the doubling at full clarity. This is documented as a business strike, distinguishing it from any potential proof DDR varieties. The medium northward spread on the lowest right branch indicates the secondary hub impression landed slightly above the primary on this particular tree element — an area where the thin, organic branch lines amplify even modest displacement into a clearly detectable doubled image under moderate magnification of 10-15x.
