2005 (P) Jefferson Nickel - Ocean in View - Doubled Die Reverse DDR-052

Description

Cataloged on the 2005-P Jefferson Nickel (Bison design) as a business strike, DDR-052 shows a medium spread to the east of the lowest right branch of the left tree on the reverse. Die markers include UVC-1643 and DMR-055. Three die stages are documented: Stage A at early die state (unconfirmed); Stage B showing a die scratch running southeast from the lower E of LEWIS at early-to-mid die state, a very light die crack above VE of FIVE, and a die scratch running northeast through the U of TRUST at early-to-mid die state; and Stage C at late die state (unconfirmed). The Stage B diagnostics provide reliable markers for confirming this specific die. The 2005 Bison reverse, designed by Jamie Franki, was part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series celebrating the Lewis and Clark expedition. This was the first time since 1938 that the Jefferson Nickel received a new reverse design, and doubled die varieties from this transitional year are actively collected.
