Description

Part of the Westward Journey Nickel Series that commemorated the Lewis and Clark expedition, this 2005 Philadelphia Mint Bison reverse Jefferson Nickel DDR-051 shows a medium spread to the southwest affecting the lowest left branch of the right tree in Jamie Franki's distinctive design depicting an American bison. Cross-referenced as UVC-1642 and DMR-054, this business strike variety is documented across multiple die stages: Stage A at early die state is unconfirmed, Stage B at mid-die state exhibits die cracks running southeast through the 0 in 1805 and through the last A in AMERICA, die gouges in the field under NI of UNITED and east of the upper S in PLURIBUS, with the obverse also at mid-die state. Stage C at late die state remains unconfirmed. The 2005 Bison reverse was a one-year-only design, making its die varieties part of an unrepeatable production window. With over fifty DDRs cataloged, the Bison nickel generated remarkable variety research attention during its single year of production, reflecting the collector enthusiasm that surrounded the Westward Journey commemorative designs.
