Description

On the 2005-P California State Quarter, this WDDO-002 documents the second cataloged doubled die obverse for the Philadelphia Mint issue honoring the thirty-first state. California, admitted in 1850, received one of the most visually distinctive state quarter reverses, designed by Don Everhart and depicting naturalist John Muir admiring a California condor above Half Dome in Yosemite with the inscription "John Muir" and "Yosemite Valley." California was among the most anticipated releases in the 50 State Quarters program running 1999 through 2008. Doubled die obverse varieties affect the shared Washington obverse by John Flanagan, where hub misalignment creates directional spread or extra thickness on portrait details and lettering. Philadelphia production numbered in the hundreds of millions, requiring extensive die usage. Cross-referenced as Wexler Variety ID: 2005-P 25c CA WDDO-002. State quarter doubled die obverses are collectible across the entire fifty-state series, and varieties from popular releases like California command particular attention from variety specialists and general collectors alike.
