2005 Doubled Die Obverse WDDO-018

Description

Attributed by Kenneth Russell on the 2005 Satin Finish Jefferson Nickel bearing the Westward Journey Bison reverse, WDDO-018 displays Class VIII Tilted Hub Doubling visible on IN GOD WE TRUST, with the spread decreasing from left to right. Class VIII doubling results from a slight angular tilt of the hub relative to the die during hubbing, producing rotational displacement that varies in magnitude depending on distance from the pivot axis — hence the diminishing spread. Satin Finish coins were produced exclusively for 2005-2010 uncirculated Mint sets, struck on burnished blanks with laser-textured dies to create a distinctive matte-like luster that differs from both business strikes and proofs. The Bison reverse, designed by Jamie Franki as part of the Westward Journey program celebrating the Lewis and Clark expedition, appeared only in 2005 before Monticello returned in modified form the following year. The combination of Class VIII doubling on a satin finish Bison nickel places this variety at the intersection of two collecting specialties: die variety research and the short-lived Westward Journey series.
