Description

Designated a "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die variety and attributed by Kenneth Russell, the 2005-P Satin Finish Bison Jefferson Nickel WDDO-001 is among the most desirable doubled die obverse varieties of the Westward Journey series. Cross-referenced as CONECA Bison Reverse 1-O-VIII and FS-05-2005P-1001, this coin carries the Wexler designation 2005 P WDDO-001 Satin Finish Bison "Best Of" Nickel Doubled Die Varieties. The doubling is Class VIII, tilted hub type, showing on IN GOD WE TRUST, increasing from left to right and strongest on RUST of TRUST. Doubling also appears on LIBERTY and the date. One obverse die marker aids attribution: a die gouge at the top edge of Jefferson's forehead, left of the I in IN. This is a Satin Finish coin, produced for the 2005 Mint Set with a non-reflective surface rather than circulation-strike luster. Class VIII tilted hub doubling is created when the hub pivots slightly during hubbing, producing spread that increases toward one end of the legend. The "Bison" reverse replaced Schlag's Monticello design for 2005. The "Best Of" designation, FS cross-reference, strong motto doubling, and Satin Finish substrate make WDDO-001 a standout collectible.
