The 2005 (S) Proof Jefferson Nickel - Bison is a proof nickel struck at the San Francisco Mint, part of the Jefferson Nickels Westward Journey 2004-2005 series. The San Francisco Mint struck 3,344,679 proof Bison nickels dated 2005. The obverse is Joe Fitzgerald's new right-facing portrait of Jefferson, based on Houdon's bust and sculpted by Don Everhart, with LIBERTY in Jefferson's handwriting. The reverse is Jamie Franki's American bison, sculpted by Norman E. Nemeth. A modern issue from an era of rotating coin designs, collector-focused programs, and renewed interest in numismatic artistry. As a proof issue, this coin was struck multiple times on specially prepared polished planchets using polished dies, producing mirror-like fields and frosted design elements. Struck at the San Francisco Mint, established during the California Gold Rush and now primarily producing proof and collector coins.
