2005D-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

Discovered and photographed by Richard Cooper, the 2005-D Lincoln Memorial Cent 1DER-001WS is the first cataloged trail die reverse variety for the 2005-D date, bearing the WS suffix denoting a weakly struck specimen. Trail dies represent a class of die error in which a working die shifts or recedes abnormally, causing design elements to trail into adjacent field areas on struck coins. Three die stages are documented. Stage C — the late die state — is the most fully described: on the obverse, a metal flow line appears on top of the I in IN and a die gouge is present below the collar of Lincoln's jacket; on the reverse, a die gouge appears under the M of AMERICA and a die gouge appears to the left of the E in CENT. These 2005-D cents were produced at the Denver Mint on copper-plated zinc with Frank Gasparro's Lincoln Memorial reverse. The Stage C markers — the flow line on I of IN, the jacket collar gouge, the under-M-of-AMERICA gouge, and the gouge left of E in CENT — constitute the definitive late-state attribution package for this first 2005-D trail die reverse entry.
