2005 (D) Lincoln Memorial Cent - D-1DER-001WS Trail Die Reverse

Description

2005D-1DER-001WS is a Denver cent: 2005 with the D mint mark, 1 for the cent, DER for a reverse design extension, file 001, and WS for wavy steps, which is TrailDies' term for trails running across the Memorial's stairs so they look bent. The bending here is very light, under columns 5, 6 and 7, offset 180°, due south. The coin described is a late die state, with a flow line on top of the I in IN and a gouge just under Lincoln's jacket collar on the obverse, and gouges under the M of AMERICA and left of the E in CENT on the reverse. Richard Cooper found and photographed it. Polishing of the die with a rotary tool is the standard account of how trails form; some attribute them to the die moving against the hub instead.

Die Markers

• Stage “C”, obverse is LDS – metal flow line on top of the I of IN. Die gouge just below the collar of the jacket.
• Reverse is LDS – die gouge under the M of AMERICA. Die gouge to the left of the E in CENT.
