Description

Cataloged by the Wexler Team as 2004-P 25¢ WI WDDR-023 with no other known cross-references, this Philadelphia Wisconsin state quarter exhibits a doubled left nostril on the cow, a subtle but distinctive diagnostic on this popular state quarter design. Two documented obverse stages and two reverse stages describe the die progression. Obverse Stage A shows no significant markers, while Obverse Stage B develops die gouges below the designer's initials WC, below and between the letters A and T of STATES, above the right side of the Q in QUARTER, and left of the O in DOLLAR. Reverse Stage A likewise shows no significant markers, but Reverse Stage B reveals die gouges between the bottom of the W and I in WISCONSIN, between the I and S of WISCONSIN, to the right of the designer's initials AM, and inside the first U of PLURIBUS. Wisconsin quarters are among the most collected state quarter varieties, and this DDR adds to the design's already substantial variety roster with its distinctive doubled bovine nostril.
