2004 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-006

Description

Cross-referenced as Crawford CDDR-002 (Wexler Variety ID 2004-P 25c WI WDDR-006), this doubled die reverse appears on the 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter struck at Philadelphia. The primary doubling is a doubled left nostril on the cow depicted in the Wisconsin reverse, clearly visible under low magnification on well-struck examples. Seven die markers establish attribution. On the obverse: a short die gouge north from the top of the F in OF; a small die gouge to the left of the I in IN; and a small die gouge in the field below the W in WE. On the reverse: a die gouge (dot) to the right of the bottom of the first I in WISCONSIN; a die gouge above the top right of the N in UNUM; and small die gouges above the top right of the first U in UNUM. The Wisconsin quarter honored the state's dairy industry, making the cow an intentional central element and hub doubling on the animal's facial features particularly meaningful to variety collectors. Washington Quarters issued after 1964 are struck in copper-nickel clad.
