2004 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-005
Error
Description
Attributed by the Wexler Team as 2004-P 25c WI WDDR-005, this doubled die reverse was discovered on the 2004 Philadelphia Wisconsin State Quarter and is most readily identified by the doubled left nostril on the cow — a memorable diagnostic that makes this variety accessible even to beginning collectors examining state quarters from circulation. Die markers on the obverse include a small die gouge (dot) inside the bottom right U of UNITED and a small die gouge touching the top of the bottom crossbar of the E in STATES. On the reverse, a short vertical die scratch appears to the right of the center of the E in E PLURIBUS UNUM, and a small die gouge sits between the tops of the S in PLURIBUS and the first U in UNUM. The Wisconsin State Quarter reverse, designed by Alfred Maletsky, depicts a cow's head, a wheel of cheese, and an ear of corn — agricultural symbols representing the state's dairy and farming heritage. The cow's prominent nostril area provides an unusually detailed surface for doubled die detection, and the extra nostril effect has generated significant collector interest. No supplementary cross-references beyond the Wexler designation are currently known. Struck in copper-nickel clad composition weighing 5.67 grams at 24.3 mm diameter with a reeded edge, the 2004-P Wisconsin Quarter was produced at the Philadelphia Mint as part of the 50 State Quarters Program.
