2004 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-019

Description

Wisconsin State Quarters are already famous among collectors for the "Extra Leaf" varieties that became a nationwide sensation in 2004, but this WDDR-019 represents an entirely separate doubled die reverse on the same coin — the 2004-P Wisconsin quarter featuring the state's iconic design of a cow, ear of corn, and round of cheese. Attributed by the Wexler Team, the doubled die manifests as a doubled left nostril on the cow, a delightfully specific diagnostic that requires examining the bovine portrait at magnification. Die markers include a die crack from the left tip of the bust on the obverse and a die gouge at the lower left of the second I in WISCONSIN on the reverse. The Wisconsin quarter's reverse, designed by Alfred Maletsky, packed considerable detail into its pastoral scene, and the cow's face provides fine enough features that hubbing displacement produces identifiable doubling on anatomical elements like the nostril.
