2004 Doubled Die Reverse WDDR-012
Error
Description
Twelfth in the extensive series of doubled die reverses documented on the 2004 Philadelphia Wisconsin State Quarter, WDDR-012 continues the pattern of systematic variety discovery that followed the celebrated Extra Leaf varieties. Cross-referenced under Wexler Variety ID 2004-P 25-cent WI WDDR-012 with no other known attributions, the Wexler Team added this to their catalog as part of the comprehensive die study of this issue. The sustained discovery of twelve or more DDRs on a single state quarter confirms that the Wisconsin design was produced using a typical number of dies, each independently manufactured through the hubbing process where alignment variation is a normal mechanical occurrence. Philadelphia's 226,400,000-coin production of Wisconsin quarters required several hundred reverse die pairs over the production run, and hubbing records — where they survive — would likely show minor positioning variations on many of these dies, with only the most pronounced examples producing visible doubling on struck coins. Alfred Maletsky's design, with its carefully detailed Holstein cow, cheese wheel, and ear of corn, features both curved organic forms and textured surfaces where hub displacement creates distinctive doubled impressions that differ from the more commonly studied architectural doubling on cent and nickel reverses. Collectors approaching the Wisconsin quarter variety catalog should note that each WDDR number represents a distinct die, and specimens from different dies will show doubling in different locations and orientations.
