2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-016
Error
Description
The sixth documented die in the Wisconsin Quarter nostril-doubling cluster, DDR-016 on the 2004-P issue presents medium spread west on the upper outer nostril of the cow. Cataloged as UVC-2019 with DMR-017, this variety's UVC number — notably higher than the sequential DDR-008 through DDR-015 group — reflects its later addition to the census, though the die was produced during the same 2004-P mintage run. Stage A shows both the obverse and reverse in early die state, with later stages unconfirmed. Medium westward spread on the nostril follows the same pattern seen across its companion varieties: a secondary hub impression shifted slightly west of the primary, doubling the curved nostril contour into a parallel line effect. The consistency of this pattern across six or more dies — all affecting the same area of the cow's anatomy — underscores how a single hub condition can ripple through an entire production run's die inventory. Alfred Maletsky's Wisconsin reverse placed the cow's head prominently enough that moderate doubling on facial features catches the eye of variety hunters searching rolls of 2004-P quarters.
