2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-015

Description

Continuing the pattern of cow-nostril doubling that characterizes a significant portion of the Wisconsin Quarter DDR census, DDR-015 on the 2004-P issue exhibits medium spread west on the upper outer nostril. Cataloged as UVC-1990 with DMR-016, this die represents yet another independent instance of the same hubbing anomaly — the curved ridge of the cow's nostril where medium-strength displacement creates a doubled contour visible as a parallel shadow line beside the primary impression. Stage A places both the obverse and reverse in early die state, with mid-die and late die states unconfirmed. The proliferation of nostril DDRs across the 2004-P Wisconsin Quarter production run — each from a distinct working die — suggests a condition affecting the master hub or working hub propagated through multiple die generations. Collectors examining 2004-P Wisconsin Quarters for the famous Extra Leaf varieties would do well to also inspect the cow's nostril area, as the DDR census demonstrates that doubled die effects on this feature are relatively common by variety standards.
