2004 Doubled Die Reverse DDR-001
Error
Description
While the 2004 Wisconsin State Quarter is best known for its Extra Leaf High and Extra Leaf Low varieties, DDR-001 documents a separate category of hub doubling: medium spread on Washington's lower outer nostril. Die markers UVC-1740 and DMR-002 support attribution. Three die stages track this die: Stage A at Early Die State remains unconfirmed, Stage B at Mid Die State shows a die crack across the front of the bust, and Stage C at Late Die State is unconfirmed. The Philadelphia Mint struck this regular strike as part of the State Quarter program's sixth year, when Wisconsin joined the rotating series of reverse designs. The MDS die crack provides a secondary diagnostic beyond the nostril doubling, helping collectors confirm the correct die stage. Nostril doubling on Washington's portrait requires careful examination under magnification, as the area is small and the medium spread produces a secondary impression close to the primary design. This variety stands entirely apart from the Wisconsin-specific reverse anomalies that dominate collector attention — it targets the obverse portrait rather than the state commemorative design.
